Mission to Murder A Tourist Trap Mystery Book 2 edition by Lynn Cahoon Mystery Thriller Suspense eBooks Reviews

I give the book two stars because it could have been an enjoyably light read. I'm usually not as critical as others of editorial slips, but this book set a new record for bad, bad editing. The author acknowledges that "good books are made better by great editors." Unfortunately she didn't have even mediocre-to-poor editors (or she chose to ignore them), and the book suffered greatly from the lack.
While attempting to bring her home up to city code, Jill Gardner discovers an old stone wall on her property might be a centuries-old mission requiring preservation. Craig Morgan, the obnoxious owner of South Cove's most popular tourist spot, The Castle, makes it his business to contest her claim because he wants to hog all the money the city has budgeted to help promote businesses.

He is later found murdered at The Castle shortly after a heated argument with Jill, forcing her hot cop boyfriend Greg to ask her for an alibi. Of course Jill decides she must find the real murderer to clear her name, even though Greg keeps telling her to stay out of it.

Minuses It’s a toss-up for me as to whether this series is an actual cozy mystery series, or a romance series dressed up in mystery clothes. If I have to hear about Jill “melting into [Greg’s] strong arms” one more time, I’m going to urp. Also, the author had some confusion regarding the sex of a dog. From one page to the next, she first refers to the dog as a “him,” and one paragraph later, a “her”. That was disconcerting.

Pluses I do like that Jill and Greg have an adult relationship that is tastefully described. I’m not a prude, but at this point in my life I don’t need to know the nitty gritty of their getting busy. Just knowing that they are getting busy is enough. Jill is easy to relate to, and I appreciate her devotion to her dog. I like the supporting characters, the setting, and the plot held my interest.

I inadvertently read this out of order. I think others would get much more enjoyment if they read the books in order. For me, this was a light, entertaining read and made me want to keep up with the rest of the series. Worth buying, I’d say. Not worth re-reading for me, but totally enjoyable the first time through. A friend lent this to me, but absent her offer, I would have bought it anyway.
I was rather disappointed with this second Tourist Trap mystery. The characters are charming (except for the requisite bad guys) and the setting is pleasant. I feel South Cove would be a nice place to live. The writing is competent and not hampered by misspellings and errors. However ...

1) To consider Jill suspect number one because she had a public quarrel with the victim -- a man who quarreled with everyone. Beyond silly.

2) If Jill ate as much as she is described as eating, most of it loaded with sugar, and drank as much beer and wine, she would be roly-poly! It would take more than the occasional run on the beach to burn it off.

3) How does this obnoxious mayor stay in office?

I had a hard time finishing this and maybe it was me. I liked her first in the series. Here's hoping that book number three picks up the pace.
I enjoyed reading the first book in the tourist trap mystery series, GUIDEBOOK TO MURDER, and the second one didn't disappoint either. It was great to take yet another trip to the small coastal town of South Cove and visit Jill Gardner and her shop, Coffee Books and More, run along with her two employees her aunt Jackie, who handles the business aspect of shop behind-the-scene, more or less planning events behind Joel's back ( although I did like the mystery of the Mystery author event) and police officer/barista Toby to handle the afternoon crowd. Even some of the usual characters in the book this time and introducing a few new ones, one of those being a new business owner in South Cove, Josh Thomas, the eccentric portly owner of the new antique shop in town. He wears old-fashioned suits and hates it when kids mess with his antiques, even complains about the local town council meetings. There's also Craig Morgan, owner of The Castle and local antique dealer. He also wants pojects and reserve any historical site in Southcove for future generations, but involves himself in the mayor's plan to have Jills mission site deemed unhistorical. Jill is not happy with this and is seen arguing with Craig about it. This only matters worse when Craig is found murdered at his beloved castle, and all fingers point to Jill as the killer for her lack of alibi and also she was seen arguing with the victim. So throughout the book Jill has to proved to the historical society that her site is the mission site, find out who the killer is even going against her police officer boyfriends wishes, and keep herself safe from from the killer that may be lurking around the small quiet town.

All I have left to say is that I enjoyed every minute of this Mistry, from the characters to the the small-town setting, to having another hard case to crack, and I mean that I wasn't expecting who the killer was revealed, but I had fun in solving the mystery.
